The Secret to Increasing Client Engagement Without Feeling Salesy

Running a service business can feel a little like walking a tightrope these days. One wrong step – one month without enough clients – and suddenly you’re slipping on the wire, feeling like you’re about to fall. Many business owners rely solely on word-of-mouth referrals, which can feel like a safety net—until it isn’t. Today, I want to dive deep into the importance of intentional marketing and how to increase client engagement without the cringe of being “salesy.”

I had to chance to talk with Dr. Ernesto Gutierrez, “Dr. E” as his clients call him, who made that fascinating leap from medicine to marketing. What strikes me about his story is how he managed to bring the same care and integrity from his medical practice into the business world. We’re going to explore some strategies straight from Dr. E’s playbook, on practical ways to draw clients to you without that uncomfortable feeling that you’re pushing too hard. These approaches have helped service professionals like you build sustainable businesses without sacrificing authenticity.

The Evolution of Dr. E: From Doctor to Marketing Expert

Dr. E’s journey is a fascinating one. He started as an entrepreneur in video production and web development way back in the late ’90s before pivoting to medicine. With a decade of experience practicing medicine, he quickly realized that he was more than just a physician—he was a business owner. This duality allowed him to wear multiple hats and apply his medical expertise into a robust understanding of marketing.

In 2018, Dr. E relocated to Spain, where he decided to retire from medicine to focus on his true passion: helping service-based professionals, particularly expert-led businesses like doctors and consultants, market themselves more effectively. Through his agency, Practice Growth Formula, he’s able to provide fractional marketing teams for those who need specialized services without the hefty price tag.

Why Word-of-Mouth Isn’t Enough

Remember that first flush of success when your business was brand new? When clients seemed to appear out of nowhere, each one bringing a friend or colleague along next time?

I’ve seen this story play out dozens of times with service professionals. That initial wave of referrals feels amazing, validating, even. It’s like the universe is confirming you’re on the right path. but Dr. E calls this “hope marketing” where you are perpetually waiting for clients to find you through word of mouth. Here’s why that’s problematic:

  • Diminishing Returns: Referrals can dry up, those referrals that once flooded in become a trickle. It’s a common experience for service providers, especially as competition increases.
  • Lack of Control: You can’t dictate who will refer you or when your phone will ring.
  • Shifting Dynamics: The nature of marketing has evolved. Potential clients are often bombarded with hundreds of options online.

So what can you do? Dr. E suggests building a marketing pipeline long before you need it. The goal is to be proactive rather than reactive.

Start Where You Are: Action Steps for New Entrepreneurs

1. Build Your Pipeline Early

As Dr. E mentions, “Start building your funnels or your pipeline way before you need it.” Don’t wait until you’re desperate for new clients to engage with marketing strategies.

  • Create a Content Strategy: Identify the content that resonates with your audience. Regular blogs, social media updates, or podcasts can nurture leads in a way that keeps you visible.
  • Utilize Your Network: Engage with existing contacts in your industry. Attend networking events in real life, and share your goals.

2. Explore Your Marketing Mediums

Dr. E suggests that your choice of platform aligns with your personal preferences. He emphasizes the importance of enjoying the process. If you find yourself dreading how you present on Instagram, perhaps it’s better to choose another medium like LinkedIn, X or Threads, where you can express yourself more naturally.

3. Engage with Your Audience

To break through the noise, your messaging has to be clear and intentional.

  • Share Vulnerabilities: Don’t be afraid to show behind-the-scenes moments. Relate to your audience on a human level; it builds trust.
  • Offer Value: This can be through insights, tips, or even a free resource. Consider creating a guide that addresses common pain points in your industry.

Overcoming the Fear of Salesy Marketing

Many professionals cringe at the thought of being dubbed “salesy.” Dr. E emphasizes reframing your approach:

  1. Focus on Relationships: Instead of pushing for sales, think about how you can genuinely help your potential clients. Transform your perspective to see the sale as the beginning of your ability to help them.
  2. Practice Asking for the Sale: It’s not just about asking for money but about encouraging clients to make a commitment to their transformation.

Building a relationship with potential clients increases the likelihood they’ll engage your services because they see the value (and now they like you too)!

Your Action Item: Try This!

  • Identify Your Signature Topic: Define one specific area of expertise that you want to be known for. Develop content around it consistently for 90 days. Remember, consistency doesn’t mean posting every day, it means showing up regularly enough that your audience learns to expect and value your presence.
  • Launch a Podcast or Become a Guest: If you’re hesitant about your own podcast, consider guesting. Sharing your insights on someone else’s platform can dramatically increase your visibility and credibility.

The Bottom Line

Let’s be real for a minute. Most of us didn’t get into our profession because we were excited about marketing. We became therapists or coaches or consultants because we wanted to help people, not because we dreamed of building email funnels or crafting social media strategies.

But here’s the truth I’ve come to accept, and that Dr. E speaks about so passionately: if your services truly make a difference in people’s lives, then marketing isn’t just some necessary evil, it’s how you fulfill your purpose. It’s the bridge between your gifts and the people who need them most.

As you find yourself navigating this process, remember that discomfort often leads to growth. What matters isn’t that your marketing is perfect, what matters is that it’s purposeful. Each post, each email, each conversation becomes a stepping stone toward serving more people who genuinely need what only you can provide.
