The Art of Copywriting in the Age of AI: How to Strike the Perfect Balance

In today’s world, we are constantly seeking ways to optimize. Whether in our personal or professional lives, many of us are looking for ways to simplify, cut costs amidst outrageous inflation, and generally make our lives easier. Ever since AI entered the scene, there have been polarizing debates on both sides of the discussion: how much should AI replace in the proper care and feeding of your business?

As a copywriter myself, you’re likely thinking I fall on one side of the argument (INSERT: Rage Against the AI movement!) However, that’s not my take. AI indeed presents many exciting opportunities.

Should you use AI Copywriting in your business?

To me, it’s not about the question “should you use AI or not?” It’s HOW you use it in your business operations and marketing efforts that make all the difference.

AI has the potential to transform the way we approach many things—writing included, but it’s vital to remember that the heart of compelling content lies in the human touch. It’s our perspectives, our lived experiences, our weird left-of-field ideas, and even our flaws that make us relatable, loveable, and yes—marketable.

Let’s take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages I see in using AI to replace your friendly neighborhood copywriter. As well as some creative strategies to leverage its capabilities without losing the magnetic essence of human connection.

5 Benefits of Using AI When Writing for Your Business

1. Efficiency and Speed: There’s no doubt that AI can produce large volumes of content at lightning-fast speeds, making it invaluable for those with high content demands. This efficiency can free up time for business owners to focus on creative and strategic tasks.

2. Research and Data Analysis: AI is a superstar when it comes to gathering and analyzing data. It can help both business owners and copywriters alike by providing insights into trending topics, popular keywords, and audience preferences, which can inform content strategy and SEO optimization.

3. Consistency and Error Reduction: AI helps you ensure you strike a consistent tone and style across all content, which is an area some business owners may struggle in if they aren’t writers themselves. Additionally, AI tools can help catch grammatical errors and improve the overall readability of content for your customers.

4. Idea Generation: Need to come up with some creative ideas fast? When you’re slamming your head up against the wall with writer’s block, AI can act as a brainstorming partner. It can generate ideas and suggestions to help kickstart your creative process.

5. Cost Consideration: For those businesses that can’t yet afford to hire a copywriter, turning to AI makes a lot of sense. It may not produce as high quality, nuanced content as a professional writer would, but it will still help the average business owner generate the text they need to keep their business moving and growing.

The Limitations of AI

1. Lack of Genuine Emotional Depth: Despite its advanced capabilities, AI lacks genuine emotional intelligence. While it can mimic human language, it cannot replicate the depth of human emotions or the quirkiness of our imagination. This makes it nearly impossible to try and create truly engaging and empathetic content from AI alone.

2. Absence of YOUR Lived Experience: Highly effective copywriting often draws from personal experiences and relatable anecdotes. AI doesn’t speak that language. It cannot understand or authentically convey the nuances of our colorful human experiences. This crucial shortcoming can lead to content that feels impersonal or generic.

3. Creativity Limitations: AI generates content based on patterns and existing data. It cannot think outside the box or innovate in the same way that the strange species known as human writers can. This limitation can stifle the originality and creativity of your marketing, which are terribly key ingredients if you want to cook up standout content.

4. Over-reliance Risk: Relying too heavily on AI can lead to a decline in the quality of your writing. I’ve seen many businesses fall into a pattern of using AI as a quick-fix solution. They are wow-ed by the initial creations of AI when given robust prompting, but over time, they get too comfortable in their content strategy. This ends up resulting in content that lacks their unique voice and the authenticity that originally resonated with their audience.

AI and Human Copywriting: Creating a Harmonic Blend

I believe there is always a balance to be struck between honoring the “old ways” and integrating the progressive nature of the new. AI, if leveraged properly, with intention, integrity, and moderation, could massively support our world in many ways.

When looking to optimize systems in your business or your marketing efforts, here are some strategies you can implement to harness the benefits of AI without losing the one-of-a-kind beauty of the human touch.

  • Research Assistance: Think of AI as your research assistant. Using AI tools to conduct thorough research and gather data can provide a solid foundation upon which to build your deliciously unique content while ensuring it is well-informed and relevant.
  • Outline Creation: Let AI step in to help you create outlines based on said research. This can save everyone valuable time and provide a structured starting point, making the writing process more efficient and cohesive.
  • Editing and Proofreading: Unfortunately, AI has us humans beat in this respect. Human eyes often skim over errors. Employ AI for initial editing and proofreading to catch those basic typos. However, always give your content a final review to ensure that it maintains the realness of your voice and emotional resonance.
  • Idea Generation: Use AI to generate ideas and explore different angles for your content. Treat AI as your creative partner, but rely on your own judgment and experience to shape the final narrative.

Conclusion

Ultimately, AI can be a powerful tool in the copywriting process, but I don’t believe it should be viewed as an equal substitute for human ingenuity. Whether you’re a business owner crafting your own content using AI or looking to hire a copywriter to elevate your marketing materials, remember that the most effective communication always comes from a place of authenticity and human connection.

AI and humans both bring important elements to the table. By finding the right balance between each other, we can pave the way for innovative, strategic, and impactful content that truly resonates with our ideal audience. All while making everyone’s lives a little bit easier along the way.
