Embracing Imperfection: Productive Weeks Don’t Have to Look Perfect
What to Do When Your Schedule Goes Completely Off Track
Ever found yourself in that frustrating situation where your meticulously planned week goes completely off the rails? Maybe you started strong with a clear plan in mind, only to be derailed by unexpected surprises—be it an emergency meeting, a sick kid, or just the general chaos of life. You’re not alone. We’ve all been there, and today, I want to dig into how to recover from that chaos without scrapping everything and starting from scratch.
Why We Fragilely Attach Our Self-Worth to Our Schedules

When our schedules fall apart, many of us instinctively treat it like an epic personal failure. It’s easy to fall into a shame spiral, thinking things like “I’m not disciplined enough” or “Why can’t I get my act together?” Most of us have felt that pang of guilt when we miss a deadline or let tasks fall by the wayside. It’s especially prevalent among women, who often feel like they’re dropping the ball when things go awry.
But let’s not kid ourselves—life happens. The universe doesn’t care about your calendar. Instead of dwelling on guilt, let’s challenge ourselves to reframe these setbacks. Shift your mindset from “I failed” to “What can I learn from this?” Remember, the goal isn’t perfection; it’s resilience.
Embrace the Messiness
It’s important to acknowledge that everyone drops the ball sometimes. It’s not just you. It’s human nature, and accepting that is the first step towards regaining control. When I work with clients, I emphasize creating plans that are grounded in priorities and realistic time frames, rather than rigid minute-by-minute schedules that often lead to burnout.
We need to understand that life is unpredictable, and rather than feeling defeated when obstacles arise, we should create plans that account for them. High-functioning weeks don’t involve perfect adherence to a schedule; they involve adapting and recovering when things go awry.
Reclaiming Control: Steps to Take When Things Go South
Step 1: Assess Your Current Situation
The first thing you shouldn’t do when your schedule goes haywire is to plan your whole week again. Crazy, right? Instead, take a moment to assess where you are right now. Ask yourself:
-
- What is still important for me to get done this week?
-
- What are my highest priorities?
For one of my clients, the week went sideways when her child got sick. Rather than stressing over every small task, we focused on what was essential. She decided to drop the extra social media posts she had planned and redirected her energies toward urgent but important tasks, like rewriting her sales page.
Step 2: Use a Reset Block
Consider implementing a “reset block.” This 30 to 60-minute time frame allows you to regroup and refocus. During this time, think critically about what you’ve accomplished and what still needs addressing.
It’s like tidying your kitchen before you start cooking again. If your space is cluttered, you can’t whip up that gourmet meal. Similarly, if your mind is cluttered with chaotic tasks, it’s hard to focus on your priorities.

Step 3: Be Honest about Your Capacity
While it’s tempting to cram everything you missed into the remaining days, don’t do it! Be realistic about what you can actually accomplish. Identify what’s essential and what’s not, and don’t fret if that means dropping tasks.
Remember: If it’s not life or death, it can usually wait.
Letting Go Without Guilt
The fear of falling behind can lead to unnecessary stress and burnout. The key is to allow yourself to drop non-essential tasks and focus on what truly matters.
If you recognize your habit of multitasking and feel it dragging you down, check out my previous episode on why multitasking isn’t your friend and how to focus instead.
Putting it All Together
To wrap it up, when chaos ensues, take a moment to regroup. Use that reset block, assess your current priorities, and shift your focus to the essentials.
After all, you’re not a failure; you’re just a human navigating a busy life. When your schedule falls apart, don’t panic. Lean into the messiness, adapt your plans, and keep moving forward—you’ve got this.
Your Action Item
Take a moment today to think about your current week. Identify three things you absolutely must accomplish and craft a reset block for yourself tomorrow. Reflect on what non-essential tasks you can let go of.
